After leaving the Navy, Gordon went to work for the Prudential Life Insurance Company. He was very successful in this venture and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. After a period of personal stress and alcoholism which ended his first marriage, he met Elida Adames on May 2, 1978 in Spain while traveling in Europe. They were married on September 15, 1978, and remained in Spain for 14 years as lay missionaries, retiring to San Antonio, Texas, in 1992.
Gordon earned a BA degree in business management in 1963 from San Diego State University and a Master of Science degree in city management and urban studies from Pepperdine University in 1974. In 2010 he wrote a book about his personal journey entitled “The Serendipities of a Mother’s Prayers” which served as a primary resource for this short biography. Gordon is the father of three sons and two daughters: Karen Miller, Dennis Gordon Barnett, David Bradley Barnett, Douglas Whitney Barnett, and Darla Joyce Henry. (Written by R. Daake in honor of my wife’s oldest uncle, Gordon Richard Barnett.)
