Dan Gardiner, Salt Lake Grocer, Dies

Dan Sibbley Gardiner, 60, of 1707 Twenty-first East St., prominent Salt Lake Grocer and church worker, died Tuesday at 4:50 p.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage.

A grocer since 1914, Mr. Gardiner had sold his store at 1700 North Ninth East St. in 1943 and was completing a super market at Twenty-first South and Twenty-first East Streets.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had been a member of the presidency of the high priests quorum of the Hillside Stake. He had served a mission to the northwestern states from 1910 to 1912 and subsequently served as superintendent of Sunday Schools in Parleys Ward. He was also in the bishopric as first and second counselor for eight years.

A fishing, hunting and sports enthusiast, Mr. Gardiner enjoyed outdoor living as a fruit grower and farmer also.

He was born Jan. 11, 1888, at North Point, Salt Lake County, a son of Alfred and Annie Poole Gardiner. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Port, April 16, 1913, In the Salt Lake Temple.

Survivors besides his widow, Salt Lake City, include a daughter, Mrs. Annie Robinson, and a son, Dan S. Gardiner Jr., both of Salt Lake City, the following brother and sister: A. N. Gardiner, Cokeville, Wyo.; E. A. and W. P. Gardiner, Salt Lake City; Olive Gardiner, Rachel Harrop, Burt Gardiner, and Willlard Gardiner, all of Ogden, and two grandchildren.
