Alexander Henry Boyd was born January 29, 1893 in Blount County, Tennessee, the son of Richard Boyd and Annie Patty. He served in the U.S. Army from 1912 to 1925. While stationed in Mayen, Germany, from 1919 to 1922, as part of the American Occupation Army of Germany, he met his future wife, Elisabeth Ternes of Holzfeld, Germany. They were married in Mayen on May 9, 1921. The couple had one daughter Mary Elisabeth Boyd, born in Mayen. Later they settled in Knoxville, where he worked as a painter and as sexton of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He died on August 22, 1941, and is buried in the Knox County cemetery.
