Mrs. Ellen Merrick Weir, widow of Captain Gulian Verplanck Weir, who served with distinction in the Northern Army during the Civil War, died yesterday at the summer home of her son, Robert W. Weir, in this village. Mrs. Weir was a former resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, but had come to Sea Cliff early in the summer to remain with her son, who was married two weeks ago to Miss Louise Dodd. Later she made her home at various army posts throughout the country from Maine to Georgia. After Captain Weir’s death about thirty years ago, Mrs. Weir made her home in Elizabeth. The funeral services are to be held at the son’s home here tomorrow afternoon and interment will be at West Point, New York, on Saturday. Captain Weir is buried in the Government cemetery at West Point. Mrs. Weir leaves three children, Robert W. Weir of Sea Cliff, G. Verplanck Weir and Miss Lillian Weir of Elizabeth, New Jersey. There are two grandsons, Swift Riche, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and Weir Riche, who is a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
