James Howard Vance Jr. of Muskogee, died Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Hillcrest Hospital in Claremore OK. He was born September 23, 1926 to James Howard Vance, Sr. and Minnie Bell (Jones) Vance. James grew up in Muskogee where he graduated from Central High School. After graduating he joined the Navy and served his country during WWII. He first attended college at Connors State College in Warner, OK, and later The University of Tulsa before beginning his career at Douglas Aviation in Tulsa. He then left to join Rockwell International in Tulsa where he worked on the first 747 aircraft and later worked on the Space Shuttle as an engineer. He retired from Boeing International working both in Tulsa and Wichita, KS after working over 40 years as a career engineer. James also was co-owner of Muskogee Shoe Shop and Repair along with his brother, Leonard Vance. After retirement, he lived in Memphis, TN, California, and finally returned to Muskogee. James eventually moved to the Veterans Center in Claremore, OK where he lived for two years before passing away. James was a former member of Sandusky Christian Church before returning to Boulevard Christian Church in Muskogee where he was baptized as an adult. James was married for over almost 40 years to Margaret Jane Davis Vance. Margaret worked in Children’s Church at Boulevard Christian for many years. James truly loved his family, was proud of his career, and spoke often with pride about being a Veteran. James was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of many years, Margaret Vance, his brother, Everett Leonard Vance, his granddaughter, Natalie Baine and his sister-in-law, Ruth Davis-Carter. His living brothers are Arthur Lee Vance, and Charles Ray Vance.
