Jan C. Collins was born on April 16, 1938 in North Dakota to Earl Collins and Laura (Patzner) Collins. He passed away peacefully in Salem, Oregon on July 28, 2014.

Collins is survived by his wife, Dolores "Dee" Collins. He is also survived by his sons, Kenten (Valerie), Dirk, and Darin, sister Maureen Mills (Robert), and grandchildren Faith and Garrett, and niece Jessica.

Jan grew up in California and in the South, but always considered Alabama his home. He spent many years of his youth being with his step-father, James P. Valent, who was in the Air Force. Jan wanted to follow in those footsteps. He began his military career in the U.S. Air Force and then joined the U.S. Army where he attended Officer Candidate School. In the Army, his first combat tour of duty in Vietnam was with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and his second combat assignment was with the 101st Airborne Division. He also served in the elite 82nd Airborne Division and in the Special Operation Command, the "tip of the spear" of the U.S. military. In spite of numerous awards, medals and decorations, Collins always stressed that he was first a combat engineer. In a more peaceful assignment, Jan completed his career as a Deputy Army Advisor with the Oregon National Guard.

Collins was very close to his men and loved his time with his fellow Airborne Soldiers. Though he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he continued to refer to himself as "LT" in front of his men, and they lovingly referred to him as such. Jan was a man of great devotion to duty and his country. He has been described by those who loved him as strict but kind, and proud but never showy. Jan believed that whatever God gave him was to use and be thankful for.

Jan loved and cared for animals and believed in helping and rescuing them any time he could. He even brought a dog (Sam) home with him from Vietnam. Most recently, Jan loved his faithful collies and cats. Collins' passionate hobby was to work on his old cars.

Services will be held in Salem, Oregon on Thursday, August 14, at 10 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial services will follow at 2 pm at Willamette National Cemetery. In addition, a Celebration of Life for Jan will be held that evening at 5 pm at Wallery's Pizza in West Salem.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lakota Sioux St. Joseph's Indian School of Chamberlain, S.D. (stjo.org), and the Humane Society of the Willamette Valley. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
