Mary A. Baczek passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 2014. Mary was born on January 31, 1920 in Three Rivers, MA to the late Jan and Aniela (Gadek) Baczek. Mary was the oldest of five children. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brother, Frank, two sisters, Genevieve Bialek, and Sophie Bascom. She is survived by her youngest sister, Elizabeth Pelkey and her husband Richard of Springfield, Virginia. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mary earned her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA. She served as a nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, 3105th Service Command Unit, posted stateside during World War II where she achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant. Mary was a near-lifetime member of St. Peter and Paul Church, now the Divine Mercy Parish, in Three Rivers, MA. Mary enjoyed walking in her community, knitting, reading and gardening and especially loved sharing the bounties of her flower and vegetable gardens with her neighbors and family. She was an animal lover, never turning away the many strays that found their way to her doorstep throughout her life. The family extends their grateful appreciation to the staff at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center for the care given Mary during her stay. We are all so thankful that Mary was at home with you when her time came. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center, 305 Maple St, East Longmeadow, MA 01028, the Dakin Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101. Private services and interment will be held at a later date at Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
