Richard S. Bandy, Sr., 93 of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Big Horn, Montana, the son of the late Horace and Rosalyn (Bird) Bandy. Richard grew up in Fullerton, CA until enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940. A decorated veteran and Mustang Marine, he served in the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal through the Marshall Islands and China. He received a battlefield commission from the rank of Master Sergeant to Chief Warrant Officer and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. For many years, he was employed by the Syracuse Newspapers as a professional photographer retiring in 1984. Concurrently he was an adjunct professor with Syracuse University at the Newhouse School teaching photography. He was a member of the Marine Corps Reserves and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Liverpool. Richard loved spending time outdoors in the Adirondacks, camping and canoeing. He was predeceased by his sister, Lillian M. Guy and a niece, Kay Bloom. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Margaret C. "Peg" (Bittel) Bandy of Liverpool; daughter, Rosalyn J. Bandy of Syracuse; son, Richard S. "Rick" Bandy, Jr. of Tully; grandson, Jarrett Shamlian (Brianna Nichols); four granddaughters, Quinn Shamlian (John Chevalier), Haley Shamlian, Wesley Shamlian (Jamison Hackleman), and Rory Shamlian. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 1 p.m. with military honors in Pine Plains Cemetery, 8686 Henry Clay Blvd, Clay, NY 13041 with the Rev. Diane Wheatley officiating. The family would like to invite everyone to a luncheon to celebrate Richard's heavenly birthday immediately following the cemetery service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
