Letty J. Larkin, 94, of Frankenmuth, MI passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 from complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was born on June 15, 1925, in Flint, MI, one of 10 children of German immigrant Herman G. Lawrence and Eletta L. (Bearup). She went to Flint Central High School but graduated from Pontiac High School, after which she returned to Flint and worked at the former A.C. Spark Plug Plant, the former Smith Bridgeman department store and as a trained beautician. She also worked as ward clerk at Lehigh Regional Medical Center. Letty served two years (1945-46) in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a World War II division of the United States Naval Reserve, where she was a pharmacist mate, 2nd Class, and worked in a hospital treating patients at a Corona, Calif., hospital. She married Bruce W. Larkin, also a Navy veteran, on Feb. 18, 1947, after dating for three months and they remained married for 62 years before Bruce died from Alzheimer's disease on Feb. 3, 2009. They lived much of their married life in Mt. Morris, MI, moving to Lehigh Acres, Fla., in 1978 when Bruce retired from Buick Motor Division. Letty moved to the former Independence Village of Frankenmuth in 2014, where she was lovingly taken care of and treated with compassion. She enjoyed spending her summers at the family cabin on Cedar Lake in Greenbush, MI., and had a deep sense of family and the importance of education, going to college herself while she was in her 50s. She is remembered by her children for her fierce determination, intelligence, wisdom, and love and unequaled devotion to family and love of all children. Many youths saw her home a refuge from their troubles, where they could come to get her advice, guidance, love, and assistance whenever needed. Letty had 10 children and was preceded in death by sons Kevin in 1987 and Craig in 1993. She is survived by children Maria and husband Allen Vaughan of Phoenix, Ariz., Bruce and wife Spring of Presque Isle Harbor, MI., Theresa and husband Jim Jilek of Phoenix, Ariz., Greg and wife Ann of St. Charles, MI; Jim of Holland, MI, Letty and husband Howard Hulsman of St. Thomas, V.I., Dennis and wife Jamie of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Rebecca of Kalamazoo, MI. She also leaves 10 grandchildren – Anissa Larkin, Miranda Jilek, Gregory Samanez Larkin, Allison Larkin, Krista Visser, Haley Marsh, Hilary Osborn, Taylor Larkin, Justin Voss and Nicole Voss – and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Herman, Alton, and Harold and sisters Louise Rouse, Margaret Coe, Grace Elwell, Gladys Lamson, Martha Fern and Leona Belle. "Seems to me, when I look back on my life, I've been happy," she said before her 90th birthday. "I've had a good life." The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mt. Morris, MI. Burial will be immediately following at St. Mary's Cemetery. A celebration of Letty's life will be held after burial services. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Alzheimer's Association by going to www.alz.org and following the "donate" link.
