Son of the late John and Rebecca Jenkins Avery, he was the last of thirteen children. He was the widower of Annie Belle Holton Avery (married on October 8, 1938). Additionally, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Earl Avery. He was survived by his son, Richard Avery (Betty); four daughters, Tessie Elks (Leroy), Pauline Stilley (Wade), Linda Rowe (Jacob) and Judy Mobley (Jimmy); ten grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held on August 15, 2014, with Pastor Ronnie Gurganus officiating.
