Charles Joseph McCann, 88, died Wed., Feb. 7, 2001, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

He was a member of the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles and Moose of Murphysboro. He was a Grand Knight 4th Degree K of C Democrat Committeeman. He was a member of the Jackson County ursing Home Auxiliary, Murphysboro Senior Citizens and was an usher at St. Andrew’s Church.

He was an Alderman on the Murphysboro City Council from Sept. 11, 1984, until Jan. 15, 1992.

Charles, along with his brother, James, owned and operated McCann’s Market in the 1500 block of Walnut St., Murphysboro, for 41 years, 1940 to 1981, until they both retired. The McCanns were well known for their high quality meats and friendly service.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1912, in Murphysboro, to Charles and Laura (Hennesy) McCann. He married Ruth Garver on Feb. 7, 1970, in Murphysboro, and she survives.

Other survivors include one sister, Laura Marie Miller of Murphysboro; and many other relatives.

His parents, one brother, James M. McCann, and two sisters, Marguerite McCann and Ann McCann preceded him in death.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Andrew’s Church or the St. Andrew’s School.
