Mr. Ali was a journalist and wrote for the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News from 1984 till his death.
He was killed by a teenage gunman at a party where he was working as a DJ - Mr. Ali's moonlighting in the world of music was one of his greatest passions. They boy had been denied entrance to the private party and he returned with a gun, shooting randomly at the crowd. Derek was the only person seriously injured and he died shielding several women from the gunfire.
Raised in Camden, NJ and a 1976 graduate of Camden High School, Mr. Ali graduated from Glasboro State College (now Rowan University) in New Jersey.
In Dayton, he started the Dayton branch of the National Association of Black Journalists and was a charter member of Alpha Phi Alpha Nu Iota. The father of three daughters, he was known and loved throughout the community and his friends were of every color, background and place in society.
He was the son of the late Elsie R. Ali and Saeed Y. Ali.
When Mr. Ali died, he was the Worshipful Master of Harmony Lodge 77, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, Free and Accepted Masons.
