TUBERCULOSIS CLAIMS ANOTHER
JOHN W. WORTHEN, LIFE-LONG RESIDENT, SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS.
Served on Fire and Police Force of This City - Son of Pioneer Family.
John W. Worthen died at his home on South Mulberry street Tuesday evening at 9 o'clock after a two years' illness with tuberculosis of the throat.
Mr. Worthen was born in this city 52 years ago and has always made his home herer. He was the fifth child in a family of nine. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Worthen, pioneer residents of this city. Eight years ago J. P. Worthen died and two years ago Mrs. Worthen followed her husband to the grave. The deceased was married 27 years ago to Miss Ella Albright, of Dunkirk. To this union four children were born, all of whom are living. The children are Harry Worthen, of Muncie, Fred Worthen, of this city and Philip and Lucile, who are at home.
Mr. Worthen has for several years been a member of the Independent Order of Red Men and while in good health seldom failed to attend each meeting. He was a member of the Hartford City fire department for many years and only the last three months has his ill health made it necessary for him to remain at home when there was a fire. Mr. Worthen was also night Marshall in this city for several years. About two years ago he was stricken with tuberculosis of the throat, and eight months ago it became necessary for him to give up active life.
Besides his wife and four children he leaves two brothers and two sisters. They are William Worthen, of North Monroe Street, Mrs. Charles Reed, of east Commercial street, and Mrs. J. D. White, all of this city, and Marven N. Worthen, of Los Angeles, California.
The deceased was an industrious man and had many friends. He had a genial disposition and everyone who knew him liked him.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at the late home, 113 South Mulberry street, with Rev. B. G. Shinn in charge. Burial will be made in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
