He was born on July 27, 1928, in Kirby, Ohio, the son of the late Raymond W. and Marie Elizabeth (Kuntz) Spoon. On December 27, 1946, he married the former Helen Maxine Bolinger who preceded him in death on December 4, 2012.
Family survivors include his daughter, Linda D. (Wayne) Knodel Taylor of Van Wert; three grandchildren, Ryan (Julie) Knodel of Lima, Heidi (Rich) Arney of Van Wert, and Justin “J.J.” Knodel of Asheville, NC; and two great grandchildren, Alexa Knodel and Alaina Arney.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert J., Raymond V., Carl R. and David R. Spoon; a sister, Virginia Craven; and a half-brother, Arthur Albert.
Jerry had owned and operated the Bon-Ton in Van Wert, then owned and operated with his wife the Goodyear Shoe Store in St. Marys from 1953 - 1995, when they retired and moved back to Van Wert. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and a member of the American Legion Post 178 of Van Wert. He was member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Van Wert and formerly of Zion Lutheran Church of St. Marys, Ohio.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014, at St. Marks Lutheran Church with Rev. Will Haggis officiating. Interment will follow at Van Wert Woodland Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the combined honor guard of the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Van Wert. Calling hours are Friday 4 - 8 p.m., at Cowan & Son Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the Church.
Preferred memorials are to the St. Marks Lutheran Church or the CHP Inpatient Hospice Center.
