Born in Jackson Co., Ga, he joined the Navy in 1957, shortly after graduating from High School in Gilmer Co., Ga. He was in the Navy for 20 years, and retired to the Dahlonega Ga. area. In 1967, and 1968, Dad was part of a Top Secret Naval effort to monitor, and interdict traffic on the Ho Chi Minh trail. It was finally declassified in 1998. He was a plane captain on OP-2E flying out of Thailand. After living in Dahlonega, Ga. for a few years he started driving a truck for a living, and eventually moved down to Milton Fl, with his 3rd wife, Betty.
He loved the Blackwater River, and bought him a pontoon boat, and a house on stilts right on one of the river branches in East Milton.
Even though he had quit smoking, he still contracted lung cancer, and died at home, in August of 1992. He was a good man, and very popular among the folks who lived and played on the Blackwater. When he was dying, and under hospice care at home, there was a constant stream of visitors. I heard one of them say, "Woody, I will be back next week to check on you.", and Dad replied, "Well, I will either be here at home, or over at Barrancus." Although he knew he was dying, he kept a good attitude, and blamed no one for his troubles, but himself. I miss him, greatly. Richard Wood
