He was called into active service as 2nd Lt. 47th Infantry Regiment on 15 August 1917. Initially assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, the 47th Regiment fought in Europe during the Great War (WWI) within the division the regiment was part of Brigadier General Benjamin Andrew Poore's 7th Infantry Brigade of the American Expeditionary Force.

Briefly attached to the VII French Army Corps near Bois du Chitelet and then sent to bolster the beleaguered 42nd Division at Ourcq, in early August, the regiment fought near Bazoches-sur-Vesles during the Second Battle of the Marne. On 7 August 1918, he was gassed and slightly wounded in that action. He served overseas from 10 May 1918 to 7 July 1919. He was honorably discharged on 25 July 1919. He was received into L'ordre de l'Étoile noire by the French government.
