Preston Lockhart Dead
Preston W. Lockhart died at his home on North Young street at 2:30 this morning following an operation to which he submitted last Sunday afternoon. Mr. Lockhart had been in failing health for some time.
Mr. Lockhart was born in Owen county, Indiana, July 27, 1854. In 1876 he was married to Mary Katherine Strokeswith, who died in 1891. To this union four children were born of whom two are dead and the other two, Della, wife of Carl Dunlap and Emma, wife of Claude Burns reside in Franklin.
On January 28, 1893 Mr. Lockhart was married to Emma Stokes, who with their only child, Nora, now Mrs. Irving Furgason, survive him. A brother, Thomas Lockhart of Piedmont, Missouri, and a sister, Mrs. Carolyne Halton of Cloverdale, Indiana also survives.
In the late eighties Mr. Lockhart moved to Johnson county and worked on a farm near Trafalgar, where he lived until his removal to Franklin sixteen years ago.
While still a young man Mr. Lockhart became a member of the Methodist church. Later he transferred his membership to the Christian church near his home in Owen county, where his brother, William Lockhart, was a pastor. He has been a member of the Franklin Christian church since 1909.
Mr. Lockhart was a man of jovial spirit who went quietly about his tasks. He was faithful in the little things which a husband and father can do to lighten daily cares.
The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Carl Burkhardt at the home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

Preston's first wife Mary died in 1891 and Preston married her younger sister, Emma in 1894. It is not known if either wife had any children. Mary and Emma's brother, William Henry Stokes is my great-great grandfather. The last name was originally Stuck, but sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census the family started using the last name Stokes. We do not know why.
