Richard H. Jackson, III passed in peace Mon. Aug. 11, 2014 at the age of 76. He was born in Bristol, CT son to the late Richard and Eunice Jackson. Loving father of Heather Demers, of Springfield, MA. Proud grandfather of Noah and Olivia. Beloved brother of Virginia Washburn, of East Granby. Further survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Much of his youth was spent in Rhode Island with his late aunt Ruth and the Warren Family in Johnston. He attended Watkins School in Hartford and graduated from North Providence High School in 1955. His love of photography started with WJAR-TV in Providence as a news photographer with awards for his coverage of the '55 flood. Early in his career he was the proud official photographer of the Hartford Symphony. He was awarded lifetime membership in the National Press Photographers Association in 2003.
Jackson served his country as a Marine from 1955-1963. He married Deanna R. Jackson, now of Vernon, in 1962. He worked at Aetna Life & Casualty Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1994. At Aetna, he grew from still photographer to director of corporate communications, designing the company's teleconferencing system in the early '80s. He served as president of the International Teleconferencing Association in 1984.
Jackson began his political career as a young upstart member of the Enfield Town Council in 1966, but quickly left after finding his dream home in Somers. In 1975, he joined the Somers Board of Selectman and went on to serve on the board in various positions for nearly a quarter century. His most important role was that of first selectman. Dick Jackson took pride in his service for the town he loved and was known for his innovative leadership and vast knowledge of the town history. He served on numerous town boards, including the charter revision commission and most recently the ethics committee, as chairman.
A true connoisseur, he loved hamburgers – burnt like a hockey puck, green relish on the side please – and diet coke. He never missed a tag sale, often conferring with his good friend and cohort Robert Cooke, of West Hartford.
