Marie Hazel (Stout) Mentzer, age 88, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, August 11, 2014, in Yates Center, Kansas.

She was born March 30, 1926, in Morrilton, Arkansas, the daughter of Guy and Tinnie (Elliott) Stout. Marie grew-up in many different places. Her father worked for the Railroad Company and was required to move around for his job. She attended and graduated from Greeley High School in Greeley, Kansas.

On July 7, 1946, Marie married Merrill Burdette Mentzer. The couple lived in Kansas City, Kansas, for a short time. Around 1948 Marie and Burdette moved to Yates Center where they made their home and welcomed their children, Jerry and Kay.

In Yates Center Marie had various jobs. She worked at the Woodson County Courthouse for a short time before she began working for Farm Bureau selling insurance. For forty-eight years Marie was employed by local real estate agent John Glades.

Upon Marie’s retirement she began going to the Yates Center Senior Center where she especially enjoyed playing cards and was involved in many of their social events. Marie was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Yates Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Merrill Burdette Mentzer, on December 10, 2013.

She is survived by her children, Jerry Mentzer and wife Linda and Kay Thummel and husband Rodney, all of Yates Center; her sisters, Blanche Van Hoozer of Yates Center and Evelyn Kluender of Louisburg, Kansas; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her brothers-in-law, Tye Mentzer of Iowa and Keith Mentzer of Reno, Nevada; a sister-in-law, Nadine Mentzer, also of Reno, Nevada; numerous nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Campbell Funeral Home, Yates Center. Burial will follow in Yates Center Cemetery.

No formal visitation is planned. Marie will lie in state Wednesday morning from 9:00A.M. until noon at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the Yates Center Senior Center which may be sent in care of the funeral home.
