During the Civil War, James served as a Private in Company E, 74th NY Infantry. The 1890 Census of Union Veterans indicates he suffered a leg wound. By 1880, he was receiving a pension, which Hannah continued to receive after James' death.
James was a carpenter and cabinet maker. James, his wife Hannah, and their children lived in Jericho in 1870, in Colchester in 1880, and the 1890 Census of Union Veterans shows James lived in Burlington by then.
Originally buried in Lot 45, South Outline No. 3, James, Walter, Phebe were moved to Lot 10 in the Oak Section.
