Joseph Pratt was the son of Mathew (Macute) Pratt and Elizabeth Bate Kingham Pratt
He married Sarah Judkins on 7 May 1662

Joseph was the youngest son and lived with his parents until about the time of his marriage. His name frequently occurs in the Town Records, in which are found his birth, marriage and death.

In 1666 and 1673, he was a fence viewer. 1667 he cut 500 shingles for his house; 1681 appointed to cut 5 cords of wood a year for the Pastor; 1682 on a committee to rebuild the Meeting House; 1685 a way-warden; 1688 a surveyor; 1693 named a "freeholder"; 1706 surveyor of highways; 1709 chosen to lay off land adjoining his own; 1710, 87 rods of land laid out for Joseph Pratt, senior, bounded by land, owned by himself and Samuel Whitmarsh, who married Hannah (his niece), the daughter of Mathew Pratt.

He appears by the records to have been prominent,not only in the town affairs, but in the church.

His will is dated March 5, 1719 (Boston Probate) (Suffolk Probate Records 22:81)
It was proved on February 10, 1720-1721.

He styled himself "husbandman, being through the decay and desease of old age weak in body." To his wife Sarah, he gave a good maintenance. To his son Joseph Pratt 10 s. besides what was formerly given him. To his son John Pratt 10 s. "If he should ever come hither again." Son William Pratt, 5 s. besides what he hath had already. Son Ephraim Pratt likewise same. To his son-in-law Aaron Pratt and to the children born of his late daughter Sarah Pratt, deceased, his late wife, 10 s. To his daughter Experience Battle 8 besides what she already hath had in bringing up one of her daughters. Son Samuel, executor. Witnesses: Edward Bates, John Reed and Joshua Torrey.
