Walter Andrew Quinn Jr, a longtime resident of Hilton Head Island, SC, died on August 10, 2014.

He was born on November 9, 1929 in Inman, SC.

Walter attended Georgia Military College and the University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1953. He was a member of the University of South Carolina Gamecock basketball team and a member of the Block C Club.

Walter served in the US Air Force as a Club Officer in Montgomery, AL during the Korean conflict.

Upon leaving the Air Force, he married Betty Stewart of Atlanta, GA where they raised four sons.

Walter began his career in the retail industry as a manufacturer's rep covering the southeastern United States for many companies including G.H. Bass Company, Pendleton Woolen Mills and David H. Smith Company.

Walter first came to Hilton Head Island in 1959, building a home in Sea Pines in 1961 he became an island retail pioneer opening Wingfield's and Wingfield's Back Porch at the William Hilton Inn Plaza in 1964. He and his family became permanent residents of the Island in 1979.

Upon his retirement he remained active in local activities, moving to Bluffton in 2000.

Walter maintained his regular meetings with friends at The Corner Perk and Starbucks where he discussed world events and issues on a daily basis.

He never met a stranger or forgot your name and regularly found friends to discuss the matters of the day and sometimes of the evening.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Thelma (Floyd) and Walter Andrew Quinn, Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty (Stewart) Quinn of Bluffton, SC, their four sons, spouses and children: John Thomas and Barbara Quinn of Maplewood, NJ, Jeffrey Stewart and Paige Quinn of Columbus, GA, Brian Andrew and Pam Quinn of Greensboro, GA and Bruce Edward and Kelly Quinn of Hilton Head Island, SC. "Pop" as he was known had seven grandchildren, Andy, Ryan, Katie, Stewart, Madison, Davis and Genevieve Quinn, this was his favorite audience whom he entertained regularly, and his sister, Betty Moorer of Naples, FL.
