Jake Miller, 86, of Vernon, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, in Vernon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Sullivan Funeral Home in Vernon. Interment will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
He was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Wabash County, Ind., a son of the late Otto Frederick Miller and the late Elsa Ridgeway Miller. He married Merle Gene Gfeller on Feb. 14, 1953, in Vernon. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2007. Miller had been a resident of Wilbarger County since 1948. He served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne and Signal Corps during the Korean War. Miller was a graduate of LaFontaine High School in Indiana. He played guitar, base, fiddle, banjo, steel guitar, and mandolin. She was a member of the City of Vernon Electrical Board for 40 years and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Vernon.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Forrester and Mable Unger, and by a brother, Bob Miller.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Helm of Lubbock; two brothers, Len Miller of Quanah and Orlin Miller of LaFontaine, Ind.; a sister, Wilma Jean Terrell of Waldo, Fla.; and one granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Sullivan Funeral Home.
