Major League Baseball Player, Manager. The light-hitting catcher broke into the big leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1932. Then he played for the New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics before becoming the playing manager of Atlanta in the Southern Association from 1936-42. He was acquired by the Detroit Tigers in 1943 because the war had taken so many of the star players, and he was on the World Series-winning team in 1945. Two years later, it was back to managing in the minors (Buffalo for three years and Seattle for one). He took over a weak Chicago White Sox team that had been 60-94 in 1950 and immediately had four straight winning seasons. He resigned his post on Sept. 14, 1954 to become the manager and general manager of the hapless Baltimore Orioles. He laid the groundwork for what soon became a top American League contender and then became general manager of the expansion Houston Colt 45s. When that club reached respectability, he became vice president of operations for the Atlanta Braves in 1966, but was fired after 1972 season. The White Sox hired him as manager in 1976, but they limped to a 64-97 record. Later, he served as a scout and special consultant for the Texas Rangers. His managerial record was 923-901. He'll always be known for introducing Orioles catchers to an oversized mitt to catch Hoyt Wilhelm's knuckleball pitches.
