Fern Temple Robinson Serbe, 91, of Champaign, Illinois passed away peacefully at 5:50 A.M., on July 15, 2014. She was born February 1, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois to Louis and Anna Klermund Temple. She lived in Glen Ellyn, Illinois during much of her early life and began calling Champaign home after her father became the Champaign County Court Reporter in 1945. She married Escoe Robinson July 1, 1944 in Butler, Indiana by which she had 3 children: Christine Faver of Davies, Florida; James (Cindy) Robinson of Highland Park, Illinois; and Richard (BaPa) Robinson of Chandler, Arizona. Escoe passed in 2006. She married Edwin “Sandy” Serbe November 7, 1953 in Champaign, Illinois by which she had 2 children: Edwin (Jan) Serbe Jr. of Champaign, Illinois and Victor (Kim) Serbe of Decatur, Illinois. They lived in Champaign, Illinois and Sacramento, California. At the time of his death Sandy was a Tech Sergeant at McClellan Air Force Base, California, flying as a Flight Engineer on the Connie as a member of the 965th Airborne Early Warning & Control Squadron. Fern and her children returned to Champaign after Sandy’s passing in 1962 where she lived for the rest of her life. Tho she had fond memories of Glenbard High School in Glen Ellyn she was a 1941 graduate of Von Steuben High School in Chicago, Illinois and a 1942 graduate of the Stenographic-Secretarial Course at the Gregg College, Chicago, Illinois. She worked for U.S. Steel in Chicago before her marriage to Escoe in 1944. Fern began working as a personal secretary for Lawrence “Bud” Hatch Law Offices in the early 1950’s where she continued until her marriage to Sandy. She resumed working for Mr. Hatch upon her return to Champaign from which she retired in the 1990’s. She was an early member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served on several committees until her health began to fail her. She enjoyed her hobbies of quilting and needlepoint leaving behind several examples of her work. She is survived by all 5 of her children, 5 grandchildren: Wayne Barnes Jr., Sean Robinson, Louis Robinson, Andrew Serbe and Hannah Serbe and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Klermund Temple, her twin brother James Temple, and her older sister and brother-in-law Annette and Bill Bell. Private services will be observed by the family. Burial will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California with her late husband, Edwin “Sandy” Serbe. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Champaign County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
