There is some confusion as to what year he was born, with 1836, 1838 and 1840 noted in various records. He may have served during the American Civil War, though proof has been elusive.

A Civil War marker was noted beside his gravestone during the Great Depression by WPA workers as part of the Historical Records Survey. In 1863, he is listed on a draft registration while living in Big Grove Township, Johnson County, Iowa, where his father, William Boal, was living.

He had an older first cousin with the same name, who lived in Pennsylvania. Both were named after their maternal grandfather, John Shannon.

Daughter Nettie was married in a place called Oasis in Johnson County in 1890, near where her grandfather William had lived until his death in 1880.
