In 1938 the 12th Field Artillery Regiment was ordered to turn in horses for motor vehicles. Members of the regiment requested that Pat, a horse that had been in the regiment since 1912, be retired, rather than turned in. The War Department approved the request, and Pat was retired with honors. Pat remained at Fort Sam Houston, including service as a training aid with the Medical Field Service School after WWII.
