Born in 1826 to Thomas and Margaret Lucy Carter Reynolds. Married Elizabeth J Flannigan (b May 17 1822 in Jackson County, GA to John and Elizabeth Pentecost Flanigan.)
Enlisted July 17, 1861 as Captain, Company B 16th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Company B aka "Center Hill Guards" was organized at Jackson County, GA. The unit was organized by and initially commanded by Capt. Abner Monroe Reynolds. Reynolds was the Master of the local Masonic Lodge and the whole lodge joined the army one night and went off to war. Reynolds became Captain and his Lt was Henry Hosch, a 50 year old farmer. Reynolds commanded Company B until Sept 14, 1862 when he was killed at Cramptons Gap (South Mountain) near Burkittsville, Md. He was succeeded by Capt J M Venable.

The Battle of Crampton's Gap preceded the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam.) A confederate force of about 500 effectives (including the 16th Georgia) was sent to defend the gap against advance of about 13,000 Union troop and slow their advance towards Sharpsburg. They were unsuccessful in defeating the opponent and suffered heavy casualties, but were able to delay the advance long enough to allow more time for Genl. Robt E Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia to become better organized. Maj Genl Howell Cobb was in command of the 16th at Crampton's Gap. Of the 368 members of the 16th GA engaged at South Mountain (Crampton's Gap), 52% were disabled (wounded, killed, captured, or missing.)
