George Duggan Jackson, son of Dr. Josiah Jackson and his second wife Mary Abbott, was born at Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania on April 16, 1827. He was named after his elder brother, who died in infancy; his brother was named after their uncle, Colonel George Duggan of Toronto. After attaining to years of maturity he became a member of his father's firm J. Jackson & Son, which conducted the leading mercantile establishment at Dushore, Sullivan County. Following the demise of his father, the firm became Jackson Brothers, and Mr. Jackson continued to follow this line until his death which occurred on November 23, 1879. The community considered him one of its representative men. In addition to his mercantile interests, Mr. Jackson owned valuable coal property in Sullivan County. Not only was he an excellent business man, but he was a figure of note in political affairs. Early espousing the causes advocated by the Democratic Party, he rose to local leadership in its ranks, and as its candidate was elected to represent his district in the State Senate, filling that high office with distinction to himself and beneficial results to his constituents. He was a man of more than ordinary ability, and devoted his talents to the conscientious discharge of what he believed to be his duty to the public. Many important measures passed during his incumbency of this office were either fathered by him or received his hearty support..

George D. Jackson married Bernice Woodruff (1832-1899), after whom the village of Bernice in Sullivan County is named. They had the following children: Mary B., who married Jeremiah W. Young and resided at Bloomsburg until her death on January 17, 1915; George Corydon; Alice Elizabeth, who married Thomas Irving and resided in Bloomsburg; Will Woodruff, a resident of Williamsport, who worked as a promoter and coal operator and married Ida Green; B.
