Mr. Fred Wayne Barnes, 79, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at his home. He was born on May 26, 1935, in Opp, Ala., and graduated from Samson High School where he played defense and offense on the football team. Mr. Barnes was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and Fort Hood, Texas. He was the a manager for Lewis Bear Company for 32 years and was an active member and head usher at Hiland Park Baptist church for many years. Mr. Barnes enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, gardening and loved to watch NASCAR and FSU football. If it had a ball or wheel he was watching it on TV.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his daughters, Wanda Barnes and her husband, Shaun Mulligan, Barbara Peterson and husband, Carlton, all of Panama City, FL; son, Larry Nichols and wife, Francis, of Orange Park, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michelle Rubright of Newnan, Ga., Anthony Peterson of Birmingham, Ala., Isaac Nichols of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jennifer Nichols of Tallahassee, Fla.; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be: Bob Jones, Jerry Carter, Brian Blalock, Mac Owens, Gene McCormick and Buddy Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Men Ushers of Hiland Park Baptist church. The family would like to express a special thank you to Covenant Hospice for the attentive care that the aides, nurses and staff provided to Mr. Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hiland Park Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of Mr. Barnes. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted at www.southerlandfamily.com.
