James was a confederate soldier that was wounded and taken as a POW to a Union Military Hospital at Jeffersonville, Indiana. He died soon thereafter from his wounds and was buried in the cemetery near the hospital. The area where he is buried is now a playground known as "Playsquare Park" and is situated behind the Rosehill Elementary School. Many wounded conferate soldiers captured by the Union forces died in Union hospitals. James was the first born of Freeborn Jupin Miller and his wife Olive Marie Jenner.
