He originally lived in Bastian, Virginia. He served in the Army and afterward moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he worked on the lakes for 18 years, retiring from the Oglebay Norton Line in 1993. After retiring, he worked for some of the BP service stations in the area. He died of cancer at his residence in Toledo. His funeral services were held Nov. 29, 2002 at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, Ohio.

His parents were Oscar C. and Opal Rowland Hagan. He was preceeded in death by them, two brothers, one sister, and an infant daughter. He married Diane Oct. 26, 1968. She survived his death, along with two sons, eight grandchildren, three brothers and eight sisters [note: the obit names only 6 surviving sisters and then one sister-in-law].
