Son of William Hutcheon, silk merchant in Aberdeen, and his wife Jessie Turner White. Orphaned at age 14, and went to stay with his aunt (Mary Hutcheon) and her husband, John Davidson at Greenbrae farm, Longside, Aberdeenshire. Trained as a solicitor in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire and Glasgow. Married in Glasgow in 1883 to Beatrice Dalziel Thomson. The couple resided in Peterhead where Patrick practiced as a solicitor. Died prematurely (cirrhosis) in 1895 leaving a widow and 5 children. They relocated to Glasgow, and eventually emigrated to Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Canada.
