Thelma Allen, 107, a Williston resident, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2014, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston.

Thelma Elizabeth DuMars was born July 8, 1907 to John Bell DuMars and Cidonia DuMars. She had one sister, Ida Mae and one brother, Floyd. Her father ran the chuckwagon on several ranches and eventually settled down with a restaurant in the Grass Range area of Montana. She spent quite a bit of her younger years cooking and serving.

She attended and graduated from high school in Grass Range. She briefly entertained the idea of nursing, but quickly changed her career choice to being a beautician. She had many interesting stories of the early days of hairdressing, with burning hair and botched hair colorings.

Thelma married Lee Roy Allen and had one daughter, Lynn Romaine, who was born December 9, 1932. They lived in Glasgow, Montana for a time, before moving to Williston. Lee ran Pioneer Sand and Gravel and Thelma ran the Beauty Box.

In the late 60's they retired to a farm close to Williston, and later one east of Williston. Lee enjoyed his livestock and Thelma enjoyed her gardening and canning produce. When Lee passed, she moved back into Williston. Thelma was an active paralegal, being an advocate for the underdog. She also attended the Silver Legislature in Bismarck quite often, lobbying for the rights of the older people. Thelma spent quite a bit of her time playing organ for her church, and then played for the Senior Citizens Choir, going to different churches and functions. She was a world traveler and had the opportunity to travel both alone and with her daughter, Lynn.

Thelma was quite brave no matter the country or the situation. She was also very close to her brother and her sister-in-law and traveled to Washington every summer to see her relatives.

Thelma is survived by her two granddaughters, Melodie Nelson of Epping, ND and Debra Haugen of Williston, ND; three great-grandchildren, Eric Nelson of Williston, ND, Cindy Wolery of Greeley, CO and Rianna Brunelle of Williston, ND; four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Bell DuMars and Cidonia DuMars; her husband, Lee Roy Allen; her daughter, Lynn Romaine; a sister, Ida Mae; and a brother, Floyd.

The Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home of Williston is caring for the family.
