Thomas was the tenth of eleven children of George and Elizabeth (Fisher) Lott, natives of New Jersey who had settled in Rush Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, about 1805. They moved further west to Clark County, Ohio, about 1824, when Thomas was nine.
Thomas was married to Susan Paist on October 11, 1838 in Clark County, Ohio. They were the parents of two sons, James Paist Lott; and George, who died in infancy. Susan died of complications following George's birth.
Thomas was married secondly to Mary Ann Holloway in Clark County, Ohio, on January 1, 1845, who survived him. They moved to Chicago after the Civil War.
Thomas and Mary Ann were the parents of five children: William, Charles F., Susan, Antone Lyman, and Benjamin H. Lott.
