Obituary: "in Memoriam: Died in Martinsburg, January 12, 1887, Mrs. Lydia Pitcher, widow of the late Reuben Pitcher, in the ninety-seventh year of her age. The subject of this sketch was born in Vermont, November 20, 1790. She removed to Martinsburg when quite young and was married to Reuben Pitcher when but fifteen years of age and together they commenced keeping house in a log shanty, erected by them, surrounded by a vast wilderness. Here they spent sixty-two years happily, amid all the toils and privations of that period.
She was endowed with a strong constitution and great energy of mind. Besides the care of a large family, she kindly cared for aged parents and others in affliction and ever spoke of them in kindest regards. They had ten children; two died in childhood, three in adult age and five yet remain. She also had twenty-seven grandchildren, fifty-one great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Her last illness was short and very severe and she longed most earnestly to depart to go to her Savior, whom she professed to love for over seventy years. Thou wilt long be missed kind, dear, devoted mother...(unidentified newspaper - Feb. 10, 1887).: Source: The Pitcher Book, A Genealogical History of Andrew Pitcher and Margaret Russell, Who Settled in Milton, Massachusetts 1634-2007, p. 162-164.
