Lance Cpl. Samuel W. Large Jr., 21, of Villa Rica, Ga.; was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Air Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, New River, N.C.; deployed to Djibouti as part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa; killed Feb. 17 when two CH-53 helicopters crashed into the Gulf of Aden in the vicinity of Ras Siyyan, northern Djibouti, while flying a training mission in the Godoria Range area. Also killed were Marine 1st Lt. Brandon R. Dronet, Sgt. James F. Fordyce, Sgt. Donnie Leo F. Levens, Cpl. Matthieu Marcellus, Sgt. Jonathan E. McColley, Lance Cpl. Nicholas J. Sovie and Capt. Bryan D. Willard; and Air Force Senior Airman Alecia S. Good and Staff Sgt. Luis M. Melendez Sanchez.

Lance Corporal Samuel Wayne Large, Jr., 21, of Britton Drive, Villa Rica, Georgia passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Djibouti as part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. He was born January 18, 1985 in Clearwater, Florida. He was the son of Mr. Samuel W. Large, Sr. and Mrs. Ada Hayes Large. Lance Corporal Large was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed deep-sea fishing and cars. He was a 2003 graduate of Villa Rica High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. in September, 2003. Lance Corporal Large was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station, New River, Jacksonville, North Carolina and was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Air Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Whitney Wilkins Large of Villa Rica; his son, Tyler Large of Villa Rica; his parents, Samuel W. Large, Sr. and Ada Hayes Large of Villa Rica; his sisters, Samantha Large of Phenix City, Alabama and Courtney Large of Villa Rica; his maternal grandmother, Daisy Hayes of Emporia, Virginia; extended generations.
