1864 John set up shop on his own at 2-4 King Street, on the corner of Castle Street, and it was not long before he started to specialise in pure confectionery and tea. Gradually he expanded his business from retail to also wholesale and established a large connection throughout the north of Scotland and of course this made it necessary to move to larger premises at 16-18 King Street, and also at 60 Queen Street.
For many years he was an elder, along with his brother Alexander, of the church and was also superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He was elected to many committees and took a keen part in public life.
He had a serious illness in 1914, and from then on his health deteriorated. His wife died in 1920, and in September, 1925 he became partially paralysed. He died in 1927.
