She was born January 8, 1915 in Winona, MN., to John Phillip and Edith Helen (Muenster) Backes. Virginia lived in Winona until her father died when she was 6 years old. Her mother remarried Chris Kraher and he adopted Virginia at the age of 10. They lived in Kasson where Chris owned and operated a butcher shop. Her mother passed away when she was 11 years old. After Edith's death, Chris married Linda (Wachs) Hoppe, and she had a son, Robert Hoppe. Virginia and Robert grew up together in Kasson. Virginia graduated from Kasson High School and following graduation she returned to Winona to live with her mother's sister, Anna Michaels. There she met and married Charles Alonzo Milton. They were married in Winona on May 5, 1936. They had two sons. They lived for awhile on the family farm near Witoka and later moved to Winona.

She is survived by 2 sons, 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a great grandchild, an infant brother, John Earl Backes, step-parents, and a step-brother, Robert Hoppe.
