US Army Major General. Witsell's early education was in the Charleston County school system followed by graduation from the Citadel in 1911. He was the military attaché in Tokyo, Japan as well as Honolulu, Hawaii and served as the Adjutant General of the Army from February 1, 1946 to June 30, 1951. As adjutant he was the highest ranking administrative officer in the Army.
