Lorenza Dow Bagwell was born Aug. 4, 1814, and died at his residence in Alexander co, N.C.,Sept 10th 1876, aged 62 years and 25 days.
In 1838 he was happily married to Miss Agnes Elizabeth Morrison, and became the father of 7 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters, all of who are living, save one, who died a prisoner at Chicago, during the war. One son, Rev J T Bagwell, is a member of the N C Conference.
Bro Bagwell joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in the year 1840, and was a zealous and active member until removed by death to the Church triumphant. During the 36 years of his connection with the church he filled at different times the various offices namely, class-leader, S S Superintendent and steward. But whatever relation he sustained to the church, he was true to her interests. He loved the church and therefore cheerfully performed any duty assigned him. He was always ready to go anywhere to conduct prayer meetings, when he thought the Master's interests might be promoted.
During the writer's personal acquaintance with him he filled the office of steward, and no steward manifested more interest in the wellfare of his pastor. He often came to the parsonage to inquire after our wants, and to encourage us with his cheerful conversation but he will come to us no more. How sad to think he is gone! No more will we hear the sound of his foot steps at the door. No more hear his familiar voice. No more will his friendly smiles greet us. No, he is gone, but doubts never come. Our loss is his eternal gain. For nearly a week prior to his death he was unconscious: Consequently the only testimony which he left was his former life. But that is sufficient. He was a good man and is gone to his reward. It is hard to part with our earthly friends, but it is a matter of gratitude and praise when we can look up through our tears and say with confidence our beloved is in heaven. We sympathize deeply with the bereaved and afflicted family of our brother, May God bless and sustain them in the loss of one so near and dear, and may we all meet him in heaven!
