Longtime Labor Leader Paul L. Whiteside, Sr., age 97 of Kenosha, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Brookside Care Center.

Born on March 31, 1915 in Zion, IL, he was the son of the late George H. and Rachel M. (Davis) Whiteside. He attended Zion area schools and was a 1932 graduate of Waukegan High School.

After a stint in Fort Wayne, IN working on a farm, Paul went to work in Chicago for Neisner Brothers 5+10 Stores. While in Chicago, he met the love of his life, Leola Baker. Paul was sent east to help open new stores. While in Niagara Falls, NY, Leola traveled there and the two were married on April 7, 1939. After the wedding, Leola returned to Chicago. Paul followed soon after he secured a job with Metropolitan Life as an agent. The couple moved to Kenosha in the early 1940's when Paul found work at the American Brass Company. Paul joined AFL Local #19322 and became active immediately, rising to President in 1946. In 1948, he relinquished his office and became Secretary of what eventually became known as USW Local #9322, a post he held until 1967.

Paul became President of the Kenosha AFL Labor Council in 1948 which eventually became the Kenosha AFL-CIO Labor Council and held that position until 1964. He assisted the Retail Clerks Union in Kenosha and in 1952 he went to work for them full-time eventually representing Retail Clerks and Meatcutter Local Unions in Kenosha and Racine until his retirement in 1976. During his time with the Unions he negotiated many innovative ideas including the first in Wisconsin Health and Pension programs on behalf of the members he represented, many still enjoy those benefits today. He was a trustee on several employee benefit plans and spoke at conferences across the country on behalf of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Paul was also on the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Federation of Labor and chaired its merger with the CIO to form the Wisconsin AFL-CIO. He was sent on several missions around the world on behalf of his union affiliations including Zaire, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Germany. He received numerous commendations and awards the most prized of which was his selection as the first Labor Person of the year by the Kenosha AFL CIO Council. He went on to chair the selection of that group for many years. He also chaired the Labor Roundtable Breakfast for many years.

In addition to his union activities, he served his community in many capacities some of which include; Kenosha Police and Fire Commission, Red Cross, Kenosha Harbor Commission, United Way, Kenosha Transportation Commission, CYC and Kenosha Joint Services. Paul was instrumental in the construction of the fish cleaning station at the small boat harbor and the band shell. He was also very active in Local, State and National politics of the years.

Paul was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and was deeply involved for many years serving on boards and committees as well as Treasurer. Paul had many interests but none outshined his passion for fishing.

Paul is survived by his son, Paul (Sandy) Whiteside, Jr.; a daughter, Emma (Bob) Anderson; his four grandchildren, Kim (Greg) Athey, Chad (Kristi) Whiteside, Lisa (US Army Captain Jeff) Krohn, and Crystal (Andy) Czarnecki; and four great grandchildren.
