Prime Minister of Bavaria. Alfons Goppel, a German politician, served in the position of the Bavarian State Premier from 1962 to 1978. He studied law in Munich from 1925 to 1929 and became a lawyer in Regensburg. He joined the Bavarian Peoples Party in 1930 and the Christian Social Union after World War II. He served as county chief of Aschaffenburg County from 1947 to 1952, subsequently as Chief Mayor of Aschaffenburg City. In 1954 he was elected a member of the Bavarian State Parliament, to become Home Minister in 1958 and eventualy State Premier in 1962. He resigned in 1978, thus being the longest serving Bavarian State ever. In 1979, he was elected Member of the European Parliament (until 1984). He was honorary citizen of the cities of Munich and Regensburg, and on the occasion of his centenary, Munich city named a street after him in 2005.
