Robert was born June 1, 1926 in Sayre, Pa., the son of the late Roger and Gertrude Park Smith. He was a graduate of Ulster High School Class of 1944 and served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1948. Robert attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical from 1949 to 1950.
He was formerly employed by Schweizer Aircraft in Horseheads, N.Y. in the finishing department and served as an airline captain for Trans World Airlines (TWA) for 27 years until his retirement in 1983. Robert was a glider pilot and enjoyed trap and skeet shooting, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilot Association, National Rifle Association, National Skeet and Trap Shooting Association, Soaring Society of America, Airline Pilots Association, American Legion, Long Island Soaring Association, Harris Hill Soaring Association, Sayre & Waverly Sportsmen Clubs, Ulster Fire & Ambulance Association and the Ulster Village Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Delores Smith; children, Charles (Debra) Smith, Connie (Mark) Matthews, Robert (Fong) Smith; grandchildren: Heather and Cassie Smith, Beth (David) Stablewski, Patrick (Kacie) Matthews, and Jared (Sarah) Matthews, Megan and Amy Smith; great-grandchildren, Ava and Aubrey Stablewski; sister, Julia Duvall; brothers, Dr. Roger (Mary Ann) Smith, Tom (Barbara) Smith, Dana Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the Bowen-Farr Funeral Home, 6 Gordon Farr St., Ulster, Pa., with Pastor Sandy Brant officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Ulster Fire and Ambulance Association, c/o Karen Bixby, RD1, Ulster, PA 18850; or to Guthrie Hospice, Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840 in Robert B.
