James was the son of Jehu "Jay" Lindley (1815-1906) and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" Lindley (1817-1913).
James parents were 1st cousins.
Jehu was the son of Jacob Marion Lindley, who was the son of John Lindley.
Sarah was daughter of Jonathan Lindley (brother of Jacob), who was the son of John Lindley.

Living in Missouri, James enlisted at age 20 years old in the Union Army along with one brother, Marshall Lindley. His brother, Ephraim Lindley served in the Confederate States Army.
