Motor racing driver. Bandini was born in Barce, Cyrenaica, Libya (Italian North Africa) and was three when World War II broke out. His family moved back to Florence where he grew up. He started motor racing in 1957 when he borrowed some money to buy a car to compete in hill climbs. He came to everybodys notice the following year when he won a class victory in the prestigious Mille Miglia in a Lancia Appia Zagato. Later that year he began to race in the Formula Junior class. In 1961 he was invited to race an F1 Cooper-Maserati in the non-championship Pau GP and finished third behind Jim Clark and Jo Bonnier. He signed with Ferrari for the 1962 season when he drove both F1 and sportscars. He won the Le Mans 24hr race the following year for Ferrari and finally became team leader in 1966. Other notably victories in sportscars was the Targa Florio in 1965 and the Daytona 24hrs in 1967. At the Monaco GP in 1967, whilst running second to Denny Hulme, he lost control at the chicane, and overturned into straw bales. The fire blazed for many minutes and his burns were terrible. Three days later he died.
