OBITUARY - MERCEDES BALTUS
Mercedes Baltus, 80, a lifelong Forest county resident, died at her home in Laona on January 20, 1990. Visitation was Tuesday, January 23rd from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Halverson-Suminski Funeral Home in Crandon. Rev. Mark Jaeger officiated services at the funeral home Wednesday, January 24th at 10 a.m. and interment is in the Laona cemetery. Pallbearers included Mike and Bill Godin, Kevin Schlosser, Jimmy Baltus, Gilbert LaDu, and Kenny Collins.
The daughter of John Otis and Ada Mae (Erickson) Starks was born January 13, 1910 in Laona. She married James T. Baltus January 28, 1955 in Crystal Falls, Michigan. She operated a tavern, a hotel in Elco, a Coast to Coast store in Laona and an LP business and trucking company with her husband.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, James, are a daughter, Virginia Spencer of Laona; a sister, Bonita Jackowski and a brother Verlin Starks, all of Laona; five grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Her first husband, Louis E. Beaudin, preceded her in death in 1954. She was also preceded in death by a son Louis, her parents, a sister and two brothers.
