Edward was the son of Francis and Elizabeth (Leighton) Small. Edward drowned 30 April 1702 in a boating accident with three other men from the village, Monomoit. It was an open boat, probably on a fishing or whaling trip. Mary stayed on after Edward's death, even buying land at Tom's Neck (Chatham).
