According to family story the surname was spelled Grier originally. The spelling was changed some time when the family was in Missouri after splitting off from the Grier family due to a conflict of some kind.

Profanity is Not Wanted
"Oakland, Jan. 12. —To emphasize the fact that the curses used by sea dogs on the high seas are not fit and proper for utterance on land, and to remind Captain F. R. Prebble that everybody connected with the administration of government in the State of California, front the Governor down to a police court clerk, is not what the captain branded them, and that they had nothing to do with the run of the tides In the estuary, this swearing mariner was today fined $25. and twenty-four hours in the city prison for disturbing the peace of Wharfinger J. B. Greer."

Autos Collide; Driver Arrested
City Wharfinger Greer Has Narrow Escape on Franklin Street
"City Wharfinger Jerome B. Greer had a narrow escape shortly before 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon when a light automobile in which he was driving northward along Franklin Street was struck and completely wrecked at Ninth Street by a large touring car driven by W. A. Smith, a chauffeur, driving for J. C. Coburn, 3790 Orchard Street. Smith was placed under arrest by officer Holmbery and taken to the central station where he was released on bail. He was charged with violating the traffic ordinances. According to witnesses he was turning on the wrong side of the street at the time he struck the other car.
Greer was thrown to the pavement by the force of the impact. His auto was shunted to the curbing with one side torn away and broken in the middle. That he escaped without serious mishap was considered remarkable by those who stood nearby at the time.
According to H. S. Gilcrest, 1427 Broadway, who saw the accident, Smith was in the wrong. Smith completely vindicated Greer in his statement. The car in which Smith was driving sustained a damaged radiator. It was able to proceed from the scene under its own power. Wharfinger Greer resides at 668 Thirty-Sixth Street."

In the summer Jerome and Achsah would drive their car with the doors open. I have heard Achsah would swing her feet out the door because the floorboard was hot on her feet. When gg grandpa was ready to pass (he had quite the lead foot and had seen his share of accidents I am told) he would tell gg grandma "Close the door Mom, we're going to pass this bird"

Jerome is the son of Jerome Bonaparte Greer Sr and Matilda Jane Blair. He came to Oregon from Missouri in 1852 over the Oregon Trail. The family settled in and around Salem, OR for a time, coming to California sometime between 1862 and 1873. He married Achsah Sherman 1 Jan 1873 in CA. They had 5 children {perhaps 6 children, James is enumerated as their child in 1880}: Clarence, William, Florence, Warren and Harold, they survived Clarence who died in infancy and is buried with them and Warren who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. Jerome was a horse team driver and trainer for the Sherman Circus (which was owned and operated by his brother-in-law John Sherman), a wharfinger at the Oakland pier, owned a prune ranch from 1916 until retirement in 1934. It was located in San Martin, CA, no evidence of it is left today due to the building of homes. He died at the home of his only daughter Florence, 1712 Fremont Street in Santa Clara.

Jerome was also a very good domino player and and avid baseball fan along with his wife. When the season was over he would invite the town baseball team (not sure what team) over for dinner.

Note: According to Jerome's death certificate he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose where many of my relatives are laid to rest. He was buried there from the time he passed until sometime after his wife died. There are records at the cemetery office that show he was moved to Pacheco Cemetery and laid to rest next to his wife and son Clarence and I have been to Pacheco, he is indeed there.

At the time of his death it is said he was the oldest living Mason.
