Capt. James William McMaster

Died Nov. 3, 2000

Capt. James William McMaster, age 81, formerly of Ludington, passed away Friday, Nov. 3, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center following an extended illness.

He was born in Ludington on Nov. 6, 1918, the son of the late Capt. Thomas P. and Martha (Olmstead) McMaster and the grandson of early Ludington residents, Joseph and Mary (Phillips) McMaster and William and Bertha (Grasse) Olmstead.

After graduation from Ludington High School in 1936, he attended the Merchant Marine Academy on Staten Island, N.Y., and became captain on the liberty ship Anna Hutchinson during World War II.

Following the war he served on the C&O carferries before returning to ocean-going vessels where he spent most of his 36-year maritime career until his retirement in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Betty June (Tompkins) McMaster whom he married Nov. 26, 1971; and by his stepson, Richard R. Andrews of Rockford; and stepdaughter, Christine M. Andrews of Kalkaska. His surviving sisters include Alice (I.M.) Kelley, Constance (James) Peyton and Martha Jean (Charles) Curtis, all of San Diego, Calif. He has one brother, Thomas (and Betty) McMaster of Los Angeles, Calif; several nieces and nephews, cousins, William N. Olmstead and Mrs. Frank Hamilton of Ludington.

Capt. "Jim" was a lifetime member of the Master, mates and Pilots Union and a regular member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 637. He was an avid reader of scientific literature and electronics literature and was a licensed ham radio operator.

A memorial service for Capt. McMaster will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Dorrell Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Carlson of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jim's family or to the organization or charity of the donor's choice with envelopes available at the funeral home.
